Johann Michael Kimmel was born in 1736 in Germany, and the family immigrated to America. At that time his name was revised, and he became known as Michael Kimmel.
Kimmel was an officer in the American Revolution. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 4th Pennsylvania Battalion (commissioned January 6, 1,776) and later as a Paymaster for the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment starting March 1777. He left the service in July 1778 with the rank of Captain. Muster rolls show his active staff service during the battles of Germantown, Paoli, Brandywine and Monmouth. He was also with George Washington at Valley Forge through May 1778. Kimmel’s name appears in the Historic Register of Officers of the Continental Army. He is also a DAR Patriot Ancestor.
Document signed by Hancock as President of Congress, Philadelphia, March 27, 1777, appointing him Paymaster of the 5th Pennsylvania Regiment. “We, reposing especial Trust and Confidence in your Patriotism, Valour, Conduct and Fidelity, We do, by these Presents, constitute and appoint you to be Paymaster of the Fifth Pennsylvania Regiment of Foot in the Army of the United States, raised for the Defense of American Liberty, and for repelling every hostile Invasion thereof.” The document is countersigned by Charles Thomson, Secretary of Congress.
