The New King James version; Reagan was one of numerous American presidents sworn in on a King James Bible, a tradition begun by George Washington.
In his presidential speeches to evangelical groups, the Great Communicator didn’t just communicate that conservative Christians were important to him and to the country—he told them that they were crucial. For example, Reagan’s 1983 “evil empire” speech—one of the most significant speeches of the 20th century—was delivered to the National Association of Evangelicals. That speech included references to C.S. Lewis’s Screwtape Letters, “a great spiritual awakening in America,” America’s own “legacy of evil,” school prayer, and the Ten Commandments. His was the Presidency of the rise of Christian conservatism.
In 1611, the King James Version of the Holy Bible was published in England. No other book has had as much impact on the world as this historic translation. In 1769, updates to the King James Version ceased. In the last thirty years, more than forty modern translations of the Bible have been published, and the King James Version continues to be the overwhelmingly favorite translation.
In 1975, more than 200 years since the King James Version’s last update, a 130-person team of Greek, Hebrew, and English scholars, editors, church leaders, and Christian laity, began working on the New King James Version In 1982, the New King James Version was released in its entirety, seven years after its commission.
After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Paul Watson was released from active military service in 1945, attended Auburn University, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical administration in 1947. He received a regular commission and returned to active military service in August 1947. During his tour of duty in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969, he served for 8 months with his son, Army Captain Richard Watson. His son was killed in Vietnam and was posthumously awarded the Silver Star. Watson then served as director for personnel of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and retired in 1972 as a U.S. Air Force Brigadier General.
