On May 16, 1861, one month into his Presidency, Abraham Lincoln sat for photographer Matthew Brady for a series of iconic photographs that would subsequently become famous. 5 images of Lincoln come from that sitting; this is one of those, perhaps the rarest to find. We have found only two that have reached the market in decades. This specific one was previously unknown.
It reads on the back “Published by E. Anthony, 501 Broadway, New York. From Photographich Negative, from Brady’s National Portrait Gallery.” Someone else has written Lincoln’s name on the verso.
This comes from the family of a prominent women’s suffrage family that also took an active part in the Civil War, and has never before been offered for sale
