A beautiful and moving photograph of Victoria and her daughter, both seated at a writing table, the Queen wearing a widow’s cap, signed by both on the image and dated 1896, mounted, framed.
The frame bears the back stamp of the Hughes and Mullins firm, a partnership, initially between Cornelius Jabez Hughes and Gustav William Henry Mullins. The business held an appointment as photographers to Queen Victoria from 1885. This means that the photograph remains in the original frame in which it was placed by the original owner.
Princess Beatrice married Henry of Battenberg, and their daughter became Queen of Spain. Henry’s brother, Prince Louis, was the father of the famed Mountbatten of Burma.
