President Benjamin Harrison Appoints a Naval Commander Whose Son Was Later Governor of Maryland

Worthington Goldsborough entered the naval service in 1862, and was promoted to Assistant Paymaster on July 2, 1864. He was assigned to the frigate St. Lawrence in the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron. He remained in the service after the war, and was later promoted to Paymaster and then Pay Inspector. The Goldsborough family history identifies him as Martin Worthington Goldsborough, whose son Phillips became the Governor of Maryland.

Document Signed as president, large folio on vellum, with an eagle at top and nautical images below, Washington, December 30, 1891, being Goldsborough's appointment to his Pay Inspector'a post "with a relative rank of Commander." The document is countersigned by Secretary of the Navy B.F. Tracy. We just obtained this document from a descendant of the Goldsborough family, and it has never before been offered for sale.
