Chang Bunker and Eng Bunker were the conjoined twin brothers whose condition and birthplace became the basis for the term “Siamese Twins”. They promoted themselves successfully in public exhibitions about three decades before the Civil War, then bought a plantation and slaves in North Carolina. During the war they sided with the Confederacy, and after the conflict, needing money, they again began promoting their exhibitions. Their pencil signatures above a certification of authenticity dated Philadelphia, August 31, 1867.
