On April 4, 1841, President Harrison died in Washington of pneumonia, just a month after assuming the presidency. He was the first president to die in office and the nation was plunged into mourning. Memorials were held throughout the country. Such a ceremony was held at Salem, Massachusetts.

Printed Document “Funeral Services in Commemoration of the death of William Henry Harrison, late President of the United States, on Monday, April 19, 1841.” There were readings from scriptures, funeral dirges, musical accompaniment, and a speech by U.S. Representative Leverett Saltonstall. This is our first program from a Harrison’s funeral service, and is a scarce memento of that first presidential death.
