On December 19, 1961, at the age of 73, Kennedy family patriarch Joseph P. Kennedy suffered a major stroke. Initially there were doubts about his survival, but he did survive. However, he lost all power of speech, and was left paralyzed on his right side. He died in 1969, living long enough to see two of his sons assassinated.
In the wake of the stroke, many people wrote President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy with their good wishes. Typed letter signed, on his Office of the Attorney General letterhead, January 15, 1962, to Dr. Charles Stitt. "Many thanks for your good note and for sending me several copies of your poem. I appreciate this thoughtful gesture as well as your good wishes and prayers for my father."
