Yale vs Harvard: Amusing and Ironic Autograph Note Signed by William Howard Taft Mentioning the Two Universities

"If you can’t become a Yale man go to Harvard.”

Autograph Note Signed, on letterhead of the Harvard Club of Boston, no place referenced but considering the letterhead probably Boston, January 10, 1914, to Randall N. Durfee, Jr., making some amusing and rather ironic remarks about the relative merits of Yale and Harvard. “For Randall N. Durfee, Jr. with the compliments and best wishes of Wm. H. Taft…If you can’t become a Yale man go to Harvard.”  Fine, with the original envelope.

Taft was a proud graduate of Yale and later Kent Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale Law School.  It is rather ironic that he is writing on stationery of the Harvard Club since the schools were not only rivals but Theodore Roosevelt, by now Taft’s enemy, was a proud Harvard graduate. Randall Nelson Durfee, Jr. did indeed attend Harvard, graduating in 1919.  His father was Treasurer of the Harvard Club of Fall River.
