Signed Photograph of President Calvin Coolidge and President-elect Herbert Hoover

A 6 by 9 1/2 inch sepia photograph of both Presidents Calvin Coolidge and Herbert Hoover standing on the White House lawn, signed and inscribed to poet and author Queenie Scott: “To Queenie D. Scott, with best wishes, Calvin Coolidge.” Below that Hoover has added his signature. The presentation is handsomely framed.

Hoover served Coolidge as his Secretary of Commerce from 1923-1928 and appears in photographs of Coolidge and his Cabinet. But there was no reason for the two to be pictured alone together, with Hoover having equal status with Coolidge, until Hoover was elected President in November 1928. So we speculate that this photograph dates from the post-election 1928 period, but prior to Hoover’s inauguration on March 4, 1929.

Inscribed photograph measures 6 by 9 1/2 inches, framed piece measuring 10 1/2 by 21 inches.

Photographs signed by the two consecutive presidents are quite uncommon.
