President Harry Truman Writes to One of the Nation’s Most Important Labor Leaders About a Federal Judicial Appointment

George M. Harrison was grand president of the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks and built the union into one of the largest in the country. He also served as vice president of the AFL-CIO for decades. An adviser to presidents starting with FDR, Harrison was on the first commission of national experts that created the framework for Social Security. When a spot on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit became available, he recommended a candidate to President Truman.

Truman thanked him for the recommendation. Typed Letter Signed as President, on White House letterhead, Washington, February 1, 1950, to Harrison. “I want to thank you for your letter of January 26 in which you recommend Honorable William C. Taylor for appointment to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. I do appreciate your interest in writing.” In the end, Truman selected Louie Willard Strum for the post.
