With Taft’s encouragement he had tried to visit President Coolidge in the White House, but his mission was unsuccessful and he was disappointed. After Coolidge returned to private life, McDougal wrote him about his failure and received this response.
Typed Letter Signed on his personal letterhead, Northampton, Mass., November 15, 1929 to McDougal. “It is possible your visit to the White House was at a time when I was not in or that you were expected to join in the line that went in to shake hands with me and did not do so…I trust I may have the pleasure of seeing you and Mrs. McDougal at some future time.”
