William Eustis graduated from West Point in 1830, and with this document he was commissioned named Second Lieutenant. A few years after, he was commissioned captain of the 4th Dragoons, and he also studied French cavalry tactics in Europe. In the Mexican War, he and his Dragoons served as escort to General Wool, and Eustis was with him when he first crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico. After he left the army, he was a levee engineer in Louisiana.
Document Signed as President, with its engraving of eagle, flags, and military accoutrements, Washington, July 1, 1834, being Eustis’ original appointment as Second Lieutenant of Dragoons. This document remained in the Eustis family until the 1930s, after which it passed down to a friend. We obtained it recently from a descendant of that friend, and it has never before been offered for sale.
