Document Signed as President on vellum, with engravings of accoutrements of war and and blue paper seal, Washington, May 24, 1864, appointing Stanage Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers with the rank of Captain. The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Edmund Stanton.
Although dated in 1864, the document retroactively makes the promotion effective as of July 2, 1863, so quite likely it is a reward for his service in the spring of the latter year.
