sold Winston Churchill Writes As First Lord of the Admiralty

Churchill served as First Lord of the Admiralty during World War I, but was forced to resign after the debacle at Gallipoli. After spending the 1930’s in the political wilderness during which he warned time and again of the increasing danger of Germany, Churchill  was returned to the Admiralty as First Lord when World War II broke out in September 1939. The fleet was wired the message, “Winston is back.”

Typed Letter Signed on his First Lord of the Admiralty letterhead, London, October 14, 1939, to Nicholas Murray Butler, President of Columbia University and President Taft’s running mate in 1912. “Thank you so very muchfor your kindness in sending me a copy of your book, ‘Across the Busy Years’, which I look forward to reading.” Churchill was only First Lord for eight months and was preoccupied with the burdens of war the entire time. Letters of his from this period are scarce, this being the first we have had.
