A carte de visite photograph of Grant with the backstamp of photographer Robert Chute of Boston, signed “U.S. Grant, Lt. Gen. U.S.A.”
Grant was appointed to the rank of lieutenant general in January 1864 and held that rank until 1866. Judging from Grant’s appearance, the likely date of this photograph is 1864. Considering the extraordinary similarity of this photograph to a well known one taken by Matthew Brady, one wonders if Chute was merely the producer of this shot and Brady the actual photographer.
