Parker was a Seneca Indian who was commissioned a lieutenant colonel during the Civil War, and who served as Adjutant to U.S. Grant. He wrote the final draft of the Confederate surrender terms at Appomattox. Later in his career, Parker rose to the rank of Brevet Brigadier General, and was the only Native American to earn a Union general's star during the war. President Grant appointed him as Commissioner of Indian Affairs, thus becoming the first Native American to hold that post.
Like Parker, Maj. George K. Leet was on Gen. U.S. Grant’s staff. He collected signed images, and one of those in his collection was this one of Eli S. Parker. We obtained it recently directly from Leet’s descendants, and it has never before been offered for sale.
