Gen. William G. LeDuc (1823-1917) was a Civl War officer who served with the Army of the Potomac through the Gettysburg campaign, and subsequently in the west. He was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers in 1865. From 1877-1881, he was Commissioner of Agriculture under President Hayes.
The Commissioner’s post was a predecessor to the cabinet position of Secretary of Agriculture, which did not come into being until 1889. During his occupation of this office, LeDuc successfully experimented in producing sugar from sorghum canes and beets, thus creating an entire industry, founded what has since been enlarged as the Bureau of Animal Industry, and instituted a division of forestry.
Autograph Note Signed with initials on an Executive Mansion card: “Gen. LeDuc: Please hear this case, & do what you can consistently with duty. R.B.H.”
This integrity (telling LeDuc to essentially do what is right) is what Hayes was known for then and now. It was a refreshing change from the scandals of the Grant Administration. Framed with a picture of Hayes.
