Lucy Webb Hayes, social crusader and beloved wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, died on June 25, 1889 at her home in Fremont, Ohio. The nation mourned and the former chief executive was prostrated with grief. On December 30, a memorial service was held in her honor at Cincinnati Wesleyan College and a 44-page program was printed to distribute to those present. It included a photograph of her, the order of service, orations about her life, memorial poems, a biography and reminiscenses. This is one of the original programs retained by President Hayes, signed on the cover to a neighbor "With Kind regards, Rutherford B Hayes" and dated "8th October 1890". We obtained this recently from a woman who father’s family home was near the Hayes estate in Fremont. It has never before been offered for sale.
