Sold – Ronald Reagan Writes his Daughter: “My years are numbered I know”

He reflects on life: "A birthday is greeted by me with some reservations".

Ronald Reagan left office in 1989.  He had been in the public eye for decades and now his life entered a new phase, one in which he would spend his time not behind the camera.  The Reagan family had its share of strife, and some of that played out in the public sphere. Before his 81st birthday, Reagan caught wind of an upcoming biography by his daughter, Patti Davis, portraying the Reagan family in personal and sometimes negative terms.  This hurt Reagan, who wrote Patti.

Reagan's 81st birthday served as a chance to reconcile and she reached out to wish him a happy birthday.  He responded in this philosophical note, reflecting on the tenuousness of life and expressing hope that he could see his child again soon.

This unpublished letter was acquired directly from Ms. Davis, is unpublished, previously unknown to exist, and has never been offered for sale before.

Autograph letter signed, February 10, 1992, 4 days after his 81st birthday, to Patti Davis, with envelope addressed in his hand, "Dear Patti, Thank you for your birthday greeting. It was good to hear from you. My years are numbered I know, so a birthday is greeted by me with some reservations. This one was my 81st. I hope one day we can get together. Again thanks. Love Dad."
