SOLD Huge Dorothy Wilding Official (and Definitive) Royal Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II

Signed and Dated the Year of Her Coronation.

Elizabeth became Queen on February 6, 1952, on the death of her father. Later that year, prior to her Coronation (which was held more than a year later), Dorothy Wilding was approached to photograph the new monarch. Wilding was the first woman to be appointed as the Official Royal Photographer, and her work now resides in the National Portrait Gallery in London. Elizabeth sat for her once, during which an exquisite set of photographs was produced. These included the official portrait and the images to be used on British stamps. This was Wilding’s most famous work and the stamps produced based upon it are now known by philatelists as the Wilding issue.

Signed photograph. A huge 23 by 30 inch Wilding 3/4 length portrait photograph of the newly-ascended Queen, taken during that session, printed by Raphael Tuck, signed and dated 1953 by the Queen. Her coronation took place on June 2, 1953.
