The ship Gondola, captained by James Renne, was a major participant in U.S. trade, often going to Liverpool. Renne ran afoul of the authorities in 1837, almost certainly for failure to pay customs duties. He was fined, thus indicating the likely offense, but must have convinced the U.S. Attorney that the lapse was inadvertent. The President remitted the fine.
Document signed as President, Washington, July 1, 1837, authorizing the Secretary of State to affix the Great Seal of the United States to “the President’s order remitting the penalty incurred by James Renne, master of the American ship Gondola.”
Renne continued to engage in international well into the 1840s.
