Theodore Roosevelt on Becoming a Grandparent

“Is it not pleasant that we are both in the select circle of American grandparents?”

Ralph Trautmann was a New York politico in the Roosevelt era. TR wrote in 1903 that it was fortunate that the Republican Party and New York City had a man like Trautmann nominated. When her husband died the next year, Mrs. Trautmann wrote to TR thanking him for his sympathy upon her husband’s death. That year Roosevelt asked Mrs. Trautmann to help find employment for a poor deserving woman, and used Trautmann as a conduit to carry $50 TR was giving the woman to help with expenses.
Theodore Roosevelt’s first grandchild was Grace, the daughter of Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. and Eleanor Butler Roosevelt. She was born August 17, 1911. The Roosevelts were thrilled. Mrs. Trautmann wrote to congratulate them, and TR responded.

Typed letter signed on his Outlook letterhead, August 25, 1911, to Mrs. Trautmann. “That is a mighty nice letter of yours and I appreciate it. Is it not pleasant that we are both in the select circle of American grandparents? Mrs. Roosevelt thanks you as I do.”
A sweet letter of TR exhibiting his joy at becoming a grandfather.
