Naval Appointment Signed by John Quincy Adams as President

Document signed as President, Washington, June 27, 1825, appointing Charles A. Thompson a Midshipman in the U.S. Navy. The document, effective retroactively as of August 27, 1823, is countersigned by Secretary of the Navy Samuel Southard.

Thompson’s first assignment was on the Frigate United States in the Pacific Ocean. This is the ship on which Herman Melville famously served in the 1840s. Thompson later served on the Sloop John Adams and the Schooner Porpoise in the West Indies.
