Document signed, January 19, 1815, Office of Pay and Deposit of the Bank of Columbia check, approximately 7 x 2.5 inches, filled out and signed by Madison as president, “James Madison,” payable to a Mr. Beall for $121.12. The Bealls were a prominent Maryland family and descend from Ninian Beall, a military Scotsman who went on to become one of Maryland’s most revered individuals.
On January 30 of that year Madison would sign a bill for the purchase of Thomas Jefferson’s library, which would join the Library of Congress.
