Ignatius Webber, Sr. was a successful shipmaster and prize-master based in Massachusetts in the late 18th and early 19th century. He retired in 1807 and wrote the “Narrative of Ignatius Webber”. His son Ignatius Webber, Jr. followed in his footsteps and was a captain during the War of 1812. The Port of Gloucester Papers lists Ignatius Webber, Jr. as a known captain, along with his father.
An ornate ship’s passport for the Brig Hope, with engravings of ships and a lighthouse, issued to “Ignatius Webber, Jr., master or commander, of the burthen of 165 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns, navigated with nine men.” It is dated Boston (Charlestown) the 11th day of January 1813, signed by James Madison as President and countersigned James Monroe as Secretary of State and by a Massachusetts notary public. There is a large paper and wax seal at left.
Unarmed and with nine men aboard, the ship was clearly engaged in trade rather than used for military purposes.
