James Madison and James Monroe Grant Land to One of Ohio’s Foremost Pioneers

Document signed by Madison as President and Monroe as Secretary of State, Washington, January 1, 1812, acknowledging that Jonathan Harshman of Maryland, having paid for the southeast quarter of land sold between the Great Miami River and the Virginia Reservation, Ohio, is granted that land. The quarter that Harshman purchased would have been 160 acres.
 
Harshman was born in Maryland, and moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1805, the year it was founded as a city. He initially purchased 40 acres of land which became known as Harshmanville. These 160 acres purchased in 1812 would expand his holdings in the Dayton area. The Harshman family were early Mad River Township pioneers and grew to become a prominent banking family in Dayton, Ohio.
