Thomas William Luslow “Lud” Ashley was a former Democratic congressman from Ohio who was later a member of the board of the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library. Upon his death in 2010, as reported in the Toledo Blade, Bush said in a statement that he and Barbara Bush “mourn the loss of a very close friend” and said Ashley “might well have been my very best friend in life.”

Autograph Letter Signed as President, 1 page, on a cream colored card imprinted “The President” at the upper left next to a gold embossed U.S. seal, Feb. 10,. 1992 to “Dear Knox.” “Lud Ashley filled me in on your conversation with him. Here’s a new picture for the collection. Warmest best wishes.” Included is the original envelope addressed in type to Knox McConnell, probably the Keystone West Virginia bank president implicated in its fall after his death.
