Clarence E. Dentler graduated from West Point in 1884. He served initially on the western frontier with the 6th US Infantry Regiment and later the 20th and the 11th before becoming the professor of military science and tactics at Oregon State University in 1894. During the Spanish American War, he served in Puerto Rico before shipping to the Philippines with the 11th Infantry in 1899. Dentler went next to Cuba from 1906-1907, before going to the War College and becoming a major in 1909. He served as a colonel in World War I.

Document signed by Arthur as President, with its eagle, flags, military accoutrements and blue seal, Washington, July 8, 1884, naming Dentler as a second lieutenant. The document is countersigned by Secretary of War Robert Lincoln.
