Autograph Quotation Signed, Boston, August 26, 1874, being the final lines of that poem. “Lord of the Universe! shield us and guide us, Trusting Thee always, thro’ shadow and sun! Thou hast united us, who shall divide us? Keep us, oh, keep us, the Many in One!” An interesting and unusual signed quotation, one we have never seen before.
Holmes own son Oliver put his life on the line by enlisting in the Union Army. He was badly wounded at Antietam, but lived to become a famed justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
