Mark Twain took a trip around the world on a steamship and he wrote a book called Following the Equator about his experiences. In the book, published in 1897, the author unmasks and criticizes racism, imperialism and missionary zeal in observations woven into the narrative with classical Twain wit. The opening page shows a photograph of Twain on the steamship with a rather happy look on his face, and a dedication that says, ‘Be good & and you will be lonesome.” That saying became one of Mark Twain’s most famous quotes.
Autograph Quotation Signed, London, June 11, 1899. “Be good & and you will be lonesome.” The aphorism cautions that following the course that society deems “good” by avoidance of such pursuits as sex, alcohol and tobacco (which Twain considered ‘delights’), will leave a person alone not to mention miserable.
