A First Day Cover honoring the 100th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences, October 14, 1963, signed by 11 renowned scientists who were Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry: Linus Pauling, a founder of quantum chemistry, molecular biology, and molecular genetics; Glenn Seaborg, who discovered the element plutonium; Harold C. Urey, who discovered deuterium; R.S Mulliken, who developed molecular orbital theory; Fredrick Sanger, who discovered the method to sequence the human genome; John C. Kendrew, whose work culminated in the production of a three-dimensional model of myoglobin; Richard L.M. Synge and, who developed partition chromatography; Ronald G.W. Norrish, who developed flash photolysis; Willard Frank Libby, for his role in development of radiocarbon dating; and Melvin Calvin, who discovered the chemical pathways of photosynthesis. A truly remarkable assemblage of some of the greatest scientists of the 20th century.
