Louis Pasteur Saves a Young Child, and Her Grandmother Thanks Him

Pasteur is grateful for a contribution given in recognition of the care given the girl at the newly-opened Pasteur Institute

The Pasteur Institute was founded in 1887 by Louis Pasteur and dedicated to the study of biology, micro-organisms, diseases, and vaccines. The building opened in November 1888 and in 1889 Emile Roux instructed the first microbiology class in the world.

In the very early years of the Institute, people who were bitten by rabid animals were treated here. It was after all Pasteur himself who had discovered a treatment for rabies just a few years earlier.

Yvonne de Puechredon was 14 years old when she came to the Institute. She was treated there and her grandmother, touched by the care given to her granddaughter, donated 400 francs.

Autograph letter signed, Paris, March 30, 1889, to Madame Sophie de Bros de Puechredon. “I rush to confirm the receipt of 400 francs that you desired to offer to the subscription in favor of the Pasteur Institute in recognition of the care given to the young Yvonne, your granddaugther.

“In the name of the members of the Council of the Pasteur Institute, and my own, I extend to you the expressions of our gratitude.

“PS – Find attached the receipt on the Credit Foncier de France where all the subscriptions are held in favor of the Institute.”

Although we do not know for certain for what she was treated, it is more than likely that it was rabies. The institute struggled financially early so this gift must have been greatly appreciated.

And young Yvonne? She lived a full life, dying in 1966 at the age of 90.
