Document Signed by both, Madison as President and Monroe as Secretary of State, large folio, April 3, 1812. A four language ship’s passport for commander Ebenezer Hitch of the Brig Wasp out of Norfolk, VA, bound for Cadiz, Spain carrying flour and tar.

On August 6, 1812, the Wasp left Fairhaven, near New Bedford, Mass., on a voyage to Europe. By this time the War of 1812 had broken out, and it was seized by a British cutter off Cape Clear, Ireland. The mate and crew were taken on board the cutter. The Wasp was carried into Cork and detained as a prize. Captain Hitch, the mate, and three of the crew were sent to Plymouth as prisoners of war.
