Sold – James Madison Signed Ship’s Passport

Signed as president.

A Document Signed as President, Washington, May 22, 1811, a ship’s passport authorizing the “Brig Taber of New York, John Baker master or commander,” carrying nine men, to “pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance, seizure or molestation…”

The document is countersigned by Secretary of State Robert S. Smith and David Gelston, Collector of the port of New York. A very attractive document with its engraving of a lighthouse, port and ships at sea, and its white seal still intact. The “J” in Madison’s signature is a bit light.
