After the assassination, the British built a John F. Kennedy Memorial overlooking Runnymede, the site where the Magna Carta was signed. It was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth II on May 14, 1965 in the presence of President Kennedy’s widow and children. One of the other Americans who accompanied the Kennedys on this meaningful and emotional occasion was Maj. Gen. Chester “Ted” Clifton, a former senior military aide to President Kennedy who was in almost constant touch with both the President and First Lady during their time in the White House.
Typed Letter Signed, March 15, 1966, to Clifton, thanking him for a memento and for coming on the trip with her. “I’ve just received the lovely vermeil box which you and other friends of Jack’s sent me in memory of our trip to Runnymede. You will never know how touched I am. I shall treasure it forever. It meant so much – your coming to England with me. I don’t think any of us will forget Runnymede.” This letter comes right from the Clifton files and has never been offered for sale.
