Sold – Horatio Alger Certifies a School Teacher’s Moral Character

"...evidence of the good moral character of S.E. Wright and of her qualifications to instruct a District School in the different branches of literature...".

Author of some 30 books depicting the lives of poor boys who, through hard work, good morals, honesty and perseverance, became successful, Alger is considered the inventor of the popular rags-to-riches genre of novels and films. So today, when very few people read his work, his name remains instantly recognizable and the term “Horatio Alger story” has passed into the language to indicate a person’s climb from humble beginnings to fame and fortune.

Alger, a former teacher who retained his interest in education, was a member of the school board in his home town of Natick, Mass.

Document Signed in that capacity, September 1, 1868, stating that the “School Committee of Natick have satisfactory evidence of the good moral character of S.E. Wright and of her qualifications to instruct a District School in the different branches of literature…” Executing the certification with Alger were two other members of his committee. Alger’s is an extremely uncommon autograph, this being just the second we have had.
