The 5th Regiment Royal Irish Dragoons was a cavalry unit that saw some service on the Continent, but was mainly responsible for helping maintain order (and British rule) in Ireland. It was there for the entire period from 1748-1799.

When James Stewart returned to Britain after serving in America in the French and Indian War ended, he joined this unit of dragoons, which from 1760-1787 was led by Gen. Sir Joseph York, 1st Baron Dover.

Document Signed on vellum, “At Our Court at St. James’s,” January 7, 1778, elevating “Our Trusty and Wellbeloved James Stewart” to the rank of “Lieutenant Colonel of Our 5th (or Royal Irish) Regiment of Dragoons, commanded by Our Right Trusty and Wellbeloved Councillor Sir Joseph York, Knight of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath and General of Our Forces…” The document is countersigned by Lord Weymouth, Secretary of State for the Southern Department. The revenue strip is still affixed at the left margin, just below the remnant of the red seal.
