Francois Bazile Burgevin was one of two aides de camp to General François Pierre Chauvel, who commanded the division that confronted the Duke of Wellington on the Spanish Peninsula. Burgevin had also fought with Chauvel against the Spanish and participated in the Russia campaign.
Napoleon used his power to reward allies and militarily successful men with titles, which also gave them access to status and funds. Burgevin earned that in service to Chauvel.
Document signed, August 24, 1811, awarding him the title of Chevalier.
This document still retains its original Napoleon red wax seal and metallic case.
Burgevin was killed by Wellington’s troops near the Portuguese border and so did not survive the war, let alone see the army of Wellington defeat Napoleon for good 3 years later.
