Hughes, a blue-blooded member of the establishment whose father was a Protestant minister, was motivated by his deep belief in religious freedom and equality. In an era when anti-Semitism was fashionable in the United States, he took a stand against it. Consequently, as the Republican presidential candidate in 1916, he won 45% of the Jewish vote.

In the 1920’s, driven by a rise in prejudice against Jews and Catholics, and the resurgance of the Ku Klux Klan, Hughes joined with prominent leaders from the Christian and Jewish communities, including Jane Addams and Benjamin Cardozo, to found a human relations organization dedicated to addressing the nation’s intergroup problems – The National Conference of Christians and Jews. This group still exists today. The Jewish Ministers Cantors Association of America (JMCA) was founded in 1897 and is the oldest cantorial organization in the country. During its distinguished history, it boasted as members such legendary cantors as Joseph Rosenblatt.

Typed Document Signed on his letterhead as Secretary of State, December 29, 1923, to the JMCA. “I send my cordial greetings to the Jewish Ministers Cantors’ Association of America and I trust that they will have abundant success in their endeavor to raise funds for the superannuated [aged] members of this honored profession, which has so largely contributed to perpetuate the most worthy traditions of Jewish music and the ethical precepts of their faith.”

A fine letter promoting brotherhood by a man who practiced it.
