Sold – Washington Irving Is Interested in Autographs of Revolutionary War Notables

He was the reknowned biographer of George Washington.

From 1855 until just before his death in 1859, Irving was diligently at work on his great biographical work, The Life of Washington. In the course of this project, he unearthed a vast amount of information about the Revolution and its notables, and many people came to him and volunteered additional materials and stories. One person who stepped forward was an early autograph collector, Benjamin Tomlinson.

Autograph Letter Signed, two pages, Sunnyside, December 1, 1857, to his nephew and attorney, Pierre M. Irving. “This is to introduce to you Mr. Tomlinson of whom I spoke to you some time since. He has gathered together a great number of curious documents relative to revolutionary affairs and personages in an album. I think you will take an interest in the inspection of these, and I wish you to give Mr. Tomlinson any advice and assistance in getting them in the way of publicity.”

After the author’s death, Pierre became his uncle’s biographer, writing The Life and Letters of Washington Irving.
