Union general who lost his leg at Gettysburg and won the Medal of Honor for it.
Autograph Letter Signed, 1 page 4to, Washington, March 3, 1864 to Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, introducing Mr. M. Healy of Philadelphia, "…a very worthy and loyal citizen, engaged in manufacturing business in that city and much esteemed by all who know him. Mr. Healy has been a good deal with the Army of the Potomac in the way of his business pursuits and won the regard and respect of the troops, especially Maj. Gen. Birney’s Division – with which he was connected. If you can accord him any privileges in connection with your command, I shall esteem it a favor."
When Sickles was wounded at Gettysburg, Birney succeeded to the command of his troops. Burnside was at this time preparing to join the Union assault on Virginia, and Sickles apparently thought Healy could help supply his troops for the campaign. An interesting war date letter from one major general to another.
