Autograph letter signed, December 11, 1822, Salem, to Theodore Foster:

“Dear Sir, You were a member of the Senate of the U.S. when the sceptre of the Presidency fell from the hand of Mr. Adams into that of Mr. Jefferson . . .. [Y]ou were requested to sound Mr. Jefferson on the subject, to ascertain whether Mr. [Elizur] Goodrich might rely on holding the office of Collector [of the port of New Haven]: that you spoke to Mr. Jefferson; and that he answered to this effect – that he had no idea of removing gentlemen from office on account of their political opinions. On this assurance, or declaration, Mr. Goodrich relinquished his seat in Congress, & accepted the office of Collector. And you know that he was an early, if not the first victim of Mr. Jefferson’s plan of exterminating official Federalists, & supplying their places with democrats – or, as they choose, politically, to call themselves – republicans. Now, my dear Sir, I trouble you with this letter that I may learn the real truth…”
