Nathan Bedford Forrest II. Army Air Corps Brigadier General who commanded B-17s in the 8th Air Force. In a 1943 bombing run over Kiel, Germany, his plane was shot down, and he became the first American general to die in combat in the European theater in World War II.
He was the great-grandson of the Confederate general of the same name, and his last direct descendant. The latter general Forrest is buried in Arlington National Cemetery on ground formerly owned by his ancestor’s commander, Robert E. Lee.
Document Signed, 2 pages 4to, Dec. 10, 1938, certifying to the correctness of the flight record of Lt. Theodore Suiter of the 95th attack squadron at March Field for the month of November. Suiter had by this time logged almost 1,000 hours in the air. Fine, signed by Forrest as Captain. Documents of this general are more scarce than those of his famous great-grandfather.
