Radical British journalist who advocated universal suffrage, a national education system and Irish Home Rule. In Parliament, he served as Gladstone’s Irish Secretary and later was Secretary for India. Then, in 1908, Morley was raised to the peerage and played an important role in the reform of the House of Lords which made it subservient to the Commons. It was his speech threatening to create as many new peers as necessary that finally persuaded the Lords to accept this reduction in power and influence.
