Signed Photograph of Lloyd George to the Son of the U.S.’s Chief Anti-War Activist

Inscribed to future governor Philip LaFollete.

British radical and campaigner for progressive causes. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer under Liberal Party Prime Minister Asquith when World War I broke out. When the war appeared to be going badly in 1915, he was asked to become Minister of Munitions.

The coalition government was impressed with Lloyd George's abilities as a war minister and began to question Asquith's leadership of the country during the crisis. In December 1916, Lloyd George took over as prime minister. An energetic war leader, he received credit for Britain's eventual victory in 1918.

A 6 by 8 inch photograph put to an 8 by 12 inch mount by the Ernest Mills Studio, signed by Lloyd George on the mount. On the verso, Gov. La Follette has written “The Right Honorable David Lloyd George, Chancellor of the Exchequer in Mr. Asquith’s ministry. Presented to Philip La Follette, January 1, 1914, Washington, D.C.”
