From a very young age Susan B Anthony demonstrated that she was proficient with a needle and thread. Around the age of 11, Susan stitched a sampler that has been described as a “fine specimen of needlework with the family record surrounded by a wreath of strawberries”.
Ida Husted Harper was a suffragist, as well as the author of a three-volume biography of suffrage leader Susan B. Anthony prepared at Anthony’s request. Harper also co-edited and collaborated with Anthony on volume four (1902) of the six-volume History of Woman Suffrage and completed the project by solo writing volumes five and six (1922) after Anthony’s death.
Her biography of Anthony notes: “There are no girls of modern times who can take such infinitesimal stitches, learned in the days when women hemmed by hand all their own ruffles and furbelows and stitched the tucks and frills which adorned the shirt-bosoms of the men of the family.”
Golden thimble, engraved with Anthony’s initials, set into a contemporary box, likely a gift to Anthony, then gifted by Anthony to her niece Maude Anthony Koehler.
