Union general whose victories in the west, conquest of Atlanta, and subsequent March to the Sea played a major role in bringing the Civil War to a conclusion.

A beautiful cabinet photograph by Napoleon Sarony of New York, 4 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches, showing Sherman in uniform as Commanding General of the Army after the Civil War, signed “W.T. Sherman, General” and dated 1889 by him. On the verso, he has inscribed, “To Miss Carrie L. Mickle, with the compliments of W.T. Sherman, General, New York, March 11th, 1889”.
