Uncommon Signed CDV Photograph of Robert E. Lee as College President

Robert E. Lee was an international celebrity during and after the Civil War. And like celebrities in every time, Lee’s picture became a collectible. Small carte-de-visite photographs were produced, in the South and the North, and sold as souvenirs. Many of the ones in the North were based on photographs taken from life by Mathew Brady. In the South, Lee was not merely a celebrity but a revered hero, and there was a great demand for photographs of him.

After the war, in late 1865, Lee became president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia, and remained in that post until his death. The school was later renamed Washington and Lee in his honor. A carte-de-visite (CDV) photograph of Lee in civilian clothes while president of Washington College, by Boude and Miley photographers of Lexington, signed by Lee. This is the first time we have had this signed image of Lee.
