Jacqueline Kennedy Writes a Recommendation For Her Personal Chauffeur As First Lady

When Leslie H. Lee was in the U.S. Army, his post was to serve as personal chauffeur and assistant to the First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. After the assassination he sought a promotion and asked Mrs. Kennedy for a referral, which she gladly gave.

Typed Letter Signed, November 5, 1964, to Ted Clifton, JFK’s former military aide who was now serving Lyndon Johnson in that capacity, relating that Lee had served her and her family beyond the call of duty. “I am writing this letter to express my appreciation for all that S/7 Leslie Lee has done for me during the past years, and with the hope that he will be given every consideration for advancement when the opportunity arises for a rank promotion. Leslie Lee has always been most loyal and conscientious, and at times carried out duties other than those normally called for in his position. He was always tremendously helpful in contributing to my comfort – as well as my family’s – and I am extremely interested in his future with the Army.” This letter comes right from the Clifton files and has never been offered for sale.
